When songwriter Karl Straub thought about the notion that in the Land of the Blind the one-eyed man is king, he figured that was about the wrongest thing he’d ever heard. Karl figured that guy was doomed. So that’s the explanation for “The one-eyed man should keep his mouth shut” line. Everything else – “Watching the evening set after a lousy day,” and “Wearing out shirts and shoes/ Hitting up friends for beers” and all such as that – will make perfect sense of some sad and pretty sort.
